The Curate Shakespeare As You Like It by Don Nigro is a comedy, which takes about 60%, or more, of its text from William Shakespeare’s As You Like It. The rest of the play tells the story of a hapless theatre troupe trying to present the play after losing 4/5 of its company members. Characters in the play are referred to by the parts they were cast as in the company’s production, but they all play multiple parts. All cast members are onstage virtually all of the time- reacting, playing bit parts or crowds, and helping (or at times, not so much helping) each other. Character changes will be actualized by physical and vocal changes and the use of quick costume elements.

A portion of the script is available here.

Character descriptions are below; any questions email me at digjr@comcast.net.

Players in the Curate's Company Character in Mr. Shakespeare's Play

Curate
Adam, Wicked Duke, LeBeau, Good Duke, Corin, Sir Oliver Martext
The Curate is the company manager, the father figure, the leader. He could be older than
the rest, but doesn’t have to be. He does have to be the authority figure. He is likened by
Rosalind to be either Shakespeare or God

Celia
Celia, Aliena, Phoebe, Snake
Celia is the voice of reason, or maybe the voice of pessimism. She realizes how good the
company really is, and at times is prone to despair.

Rosalind
Minstrel, Chorus, Deer, Stage Direction, Bush, Footnote
Rosalind is beloved by all the company members, and may actually be a great actress, but
she has lost her mind, and can’t keep her lines in her head. She is described as having the
voice of an angel, and, at times, leads the company in Elizabethan songs.

William
Orlando, Musician, William
William the actor is, for the most part, the rough uncultured farm hand his original character is, but he rises to the occasion and his Orlando surprises everyone.

Amiens
Oliver, Sentry, Amiens, Jaques, Musician, Silvius
Amiens is a bit player who is called on to perform one of Shakespeare’s iconic characters, to less than stellar results. He has been involved in the past with Celia, and wishes to be so again.

Clown
Dennis, Charles, Sentry, Touchstone, Oak Tree, Jaques de Boys, Hymen
Clown is a trooper, but unfortunately, not a terribly funny one.He is the backbone of the company.

Audrey
Rosalind, Ganymede, Audrey, Lioness
Audrey is the essential Broadway Baby, plucked out of the chorus to replace the star, and becoming a star herself. She begins as an unconfident nobody, and grows into a star, with slight detour into diva, to make it interesting.
